FCHS launches Kindred Spirits

to promote seniors adopting seniors

In an effort to promote companionship and improved health and well-being for those over 65, the Finney County Humane Society has launched a new program that encourages senior citizens to adopt senior dogs and cats.

“The program is called Kindred Spirits and it provides a wonderful opportunity for those 65 years and older to receive $50 off the adoption fee when they select a dog or cat from the shelter,” said Amanda Licona, shelter manager. “They can also get an additional $50 off if they choose a cat or dog that is eight years or older. This is a perfect partnership between senior people and senior animals.”

Licona said extensive research has shown pets help reduce the feeling of social isolation and loneliness that is often experienced by senior citizens. Through Kindred Spirits, often overlooked older dogs and cats who still have good years left to provide companionship, are given priority for adoption.

“Even if you’re not a senior over 65, anyone who adopts a qualifying older cat or dog will receive $50 off their adoption fee,” Licona said. “Any time we can help senior animals in our community find forever homes where both the owner and animal can benefit from each other’s company, what a great day that is!”

The community is invited to go to FCHS’s website at www.adoptgck.com to see all animals ready for adoption or stop by the shelter at 124 N. Fleming Street. For more information, please phone 620.277.3725.
